► (1883-1924) Escritor checo. Sus obras reflejan la angustia del hombre inmerso en un mundo paradójicamente impenetrable. Es autor de novelas cortas, cuentos y novelas, entre las que cabe mencionar: La metamorfosis (1915), donde plantea el problema de la convivencia, La sentencia (1916), Carta al padre (1919) y El proceso (1925), entre otras.

Escritor checo en lengua alemana. Nacido en el seno de una familia judía de clase media, Kafka obtuvo un doctorado y luego trabajó desde 1907 con éxito, pero descontento, en una oficina gubernamental de seguros, hasta que se vio obligado a renunciar en 1922 a causa de la tuberculosis, enfermedad que le causó la muerte dos años después. Hipersensible y neurótico, en su vida publicó a regañadientes sólo unos pocos trabajos, incluido el relato simbólico La metamorfosis (1915), la fantasía alegórica En la colonia penitenciaria (1919) y la colección de cuentos Un médico rural (1919). Sus novelas inconclusas El proceso (1925), El castillo (1926) y América (1927), publicadas póstumamente y contra su voluntad, expresan las ansiedades y alienación de la humanidad del s. XX. Sus relatos visionarios, con su mezcla inescrutable de lo real y lo fantástico, han provocado un sinfín de interpretaciones. La reputación e influencia póstuma de Kafka han sido inmensas, y se lo considera uno de los grandes escritores europeos del s. XX.
